Though some of the logistics are still to be determined, there will be free box fans available for those who need them next week in Lawrence.
Weather forecasts show that temperatures in or near the 90s are here to stay for at least the next several days.
This year, the Senior Resource Center for Douglas County stepped in to serve as the site for Evergy’s annual box fan distribution.
Megan Poindexter, executive director of the SRC, said via email Tuesday that the center hasn’t hosted this event before. She said some folks from the Salvation Army, which usually hosts, will help figure out how to make it work at that location later this week.
“They (Evergy) will have to bring a big truck with all the fans, and I’m not sure exactly where we will be able to park it but my hope is to have the fans themselves on the Vermont Street side of the Senior Resource Center, where we have some patio space,” Poindexter wrote. “There’s also a little cut in where people can pull in, but I’m a little worried about guaranteeing that will work because of traffic flow and the fact that there is also a bus stop right there.
“However, if folks come to 745 Vermont St. that day, I feel pretty confident they won’t miss seeing it!” she said.
Fans will be available for all — no age restrictions — from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at the SRC. There will be about 160 fans to give out, Poindexter said, available on a first-come, first-served basis and with a maximum of two fans per vehicle.
