Brian Daldorph has been teaching writing classes for men incarcerated at the Douglas County jail for two decades, and he recently published a memoir looking back at those years.

“You really get into it, and you think you’re doing something important,” Daldorph said in an interview ahead of the book’s May release. “And I just felt totally committed to doing that, and also I was seeing the good effects of the program on the inmates that I worked with.”

Daldorph’s memoir, “Words Is a Powerful Thing,” borrows its title from one man’s poem by the same name. Along with some of the writers he’s taught, he will present the book during a virtual event next week.

“They turned to writing and creativity and self-expression as something that was really important, that could get them to a better place,” he said of the incarcerated students.

The Raven Book Store will host the free virtual event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, via Crowdcast.

Register for the virtual event at this link. A replay of the event will be available afterward for those who can’t make it.

Daldorph’s book, published by the University Press of Kansas, is available in paperback for $19.95 through The Raven. Check out other Raven events at this link.
