The university began phasing masks out once the Douglas County Commission allowed a countywide mask mandate to expire at the beginning of March; however, masks were still required in classrooms and some other spaces.

Masks will still be required on buses and in Watkins Health Center, according to a message to campus Friday afternoon, and campus childcare facilities may require masks if they choose to do so.

“The pandemic has taught us to expect the unexpected, and if conditions take a turn in the wrong direction, we will adjust as we have in the past,” Chancellor Douglas Girod, a medical doctor, said in the message.

“With that said, given that COVID rates have declined to their lowest levels since the beginning of the pandemic, it is appropriate to remove our mask mandate.”
