The city will close Massachusetts Street in anticipation of — hopefully — large crowds of Jayhawk fans celebrating, according to a news release Monday.
KU takes on Villanova in the Final Four just after 5 p.m. Saturday, April 2. Parking in downtown will be free Saturday and, hopefully, again on Monday, April 4, if KU advances to the championship game.
Street closures will begin at 6 a.m. on game days. Massachusetts Street will be closed from Sixth through 11th Streets. At two hours before tipoff — around 3 p.m. Saturday — the closure will extend through South Park Street.
Sixth Street will remain open to traffic all day. Ninth and 11th streets will be open until two hours before tipoff, but will close around 3 p.m.
Vehicles that are on Mass Street after 6 a.m. on game day will be “courtesy towed” to the Community Center parking lot at 11th and Vermont streets, according to the release, where they can be retrieved anytime.
The city discourages use of glass bottles and other glassware, as well as rooftop activities.
