Police say a man died early Sunday after crashing into a light pole in southern Lawrence.

Officers were dispatched to the crash around 2:15 a.m. Sunday at 31st Street and Atchison Avenue, Lawrence Police Department Major Trent McKinley said via email Sunday.

“Responding officers arrived to find a vehicle with a single occupant had collided with a light pole on the northwest corner of the intersection,” McKinley said. “The vehicle sustained heavy damage and power lines were down as a result of the collision.”

Officers and paramedics attempted to render aid; however, they determined that the man was dead at the scene, McKinley said.

31st Street was closed between Atchison Avenue and Kasold Drive until 8:15 a.m. Sunday, McKinley said.

LPD had not released the man’s name as of Sunday morning, and the circumstances of the crash were unclear.

The crash was under investigation and additional details would be released Monday, McKinley said early Sunday.
