Katoya Leasa Owens, 39, of Lawrence, was the woman killed in a crash early Monday, according to the Lawrence Police Department.

John Grant Redding, 36, of Lawrence, was seriously injured but is in stable condition as of Tuesday, according to LPD.

Owens was driving a Nissan Maxima eastbound, and Redding was westbound in a Jaguar S-Type. The crash occurred just west of the intersection of Sixth and Iowa streets around 1:50 a.m. Monday “in the westbound lanes of travel,” according to LPD.

“LKPD officers performed chest compressions on one of the victims while pinned inside the vehicle, but paramedics later pronounced the driver dead on the scene,” LPD said Monday.

First responders at the scene said extrication was needed for a patient who suffered injuries that were believed to be serious, according to scanner traffic. That driver was pinned in the car, but first responders were able to get the driver out and transported, according to LPD.

Owens was not wearing a seat belt, according to LPD.
