A 43-year-old man died early Wednesday after being hit by a train in North Lawrence, according to police.
The man was struck near the 600 block of Maple Street just after midnight, according to a Facebook post from Lawrence police.
“The Union Pacific engineer told responding officers he saw the man laying on the tracks and attempted to stop the train, which was nearly 2 miles long, but was unable to do so in time,” according to the post.
Officers found the man near Fifth and Maple streets, where he was pronounced dead, according to the post.
No one was onboard the train besides the two engineers, according to the post.
