Many Lawrencians got up very early Monday morning ready to defend the town on the 160th anniversary of Quantrill’s Raid.

The Defend Lawrence 5K or 1-mile run, hosted by Ad Astra Running, starts at 5:05 a.m. every Aug. 21, the same time that Quantrill’s forces attacked the town in 1863. The annual tradition started in 2014.

“It was a hot muggy morning and everyone was soaked by the end of the run,” Gene Wee, of runLawrence, said via email Monday.

The excessive heat warning will continue through Thursday. The National Weather Service encourages folks to limit outdoor activities to early or late in the day if possible, stay hydrated and stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible. For info about cooling sites available to the public, see this article.
