Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health is partnering with the Eudora school district to expand access to WIC services by making them available onsite at district offices, 1310 Winchester Road in Eudora.

“To begin, LDCPH staff will be present once a month, but that may change over time,” according to a news release from the department.

WIC — short for Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children — assists qualifying pregnant and postpartum people and families with children under age 5.

Services include personalized nutrition information and support, electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to buy healthy food, tips for eating well to improve health, breastfeeding support, and referrals for services that can benefit the whole family, according to the release.

“We’ve long served Eudora residents at our clinic location in Lawrence, and with our amazing Mobile Clinic, but now we will begin providing some services on location thanks to our collaboration with USD 491,” Daniel B. Smith, a spokesperson for the health department, said via email Tuesday.

Eligible families have incomes at or below 185% of the federal poverty line. That’s up to $36,482 annually ($3,040 monthly) for a household of two, $55,500 annually ($4,625 monthly) for a household of four, under federal poverty guidelines.

“LDCPH is hopeful that this new location will increase WIC utilization in Douglas County and make it easier for some families already accessing WIC services who live outside of Lawrence,” the release continued.

To sign up for WIC services, call or text 785-856-5350 or email wic@ldchealth.org, according to the release. More information about WIC is available at ldchealth.org/wic. Services are available in English and Spanish.
