The Lawrence school district has canceled school Wednesday, the second day in a row, because of snowstorms.
School is canceled “due to safety concerns with snow-packed roads & the potential for wet surfaces to freeze overnight & become icy. School activities are canceled tomorrow. All buildings will be closed,” according to a tweet from the district.
The Lawrence Public Library will also delay opening until noon Wednesday.
“By then we hope things will have warmed up enough to make the roads less hazardous,” Heather Kearns, a spokesperson for the library, said in an email Tuesday evening.
Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 36°, but weather conditions won’t be improving soon from there.
Thursday night into Friday morning could bring more snowfall, and National Weather Service meteorologist Jenifer Prieto said she and her colleagues were still working on those amount estimations. More snow could also come Saturday night into Sunday.
Temperatures will likely hit a low around 13° Thursday night, Friday’s forecast shows a high of 18° and a nighttime low of 0°, and wind chills are expected to be very cold. Then the NWS expects it to get colder. Sunday night into Monday, the forecast shows a low of -10°.
City of Lawrence recreation facilities will return to regular hours Wednesday, and they will be available for warming. See locations and hours at this link.
