Free State High School graduate Becca Craft has been selected for the P.E.O. STAR scholarship by P.E.O. chapter HZ of Lawrence.
“Becca is a very deserving young woman and we wish her the best as she begins her studies at the University of Southern California in the fall,” Judy Whitney, a member of the chapter, wrote in submitting this photo.
Craft is pictured at left next to chapter member Linda Robinson.
The national P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) established the scholarship in 2009 “to provide scholarships for exceptional women in their final year of high school to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution,” according to its website.
Craft was announced during the FSHS graduation as a winner of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Citizenship Award, presented to students who demonstrate respect and responsibility within their school communities.
In addition, she was also recognized during Tuesday’s Lawrence school board meeting, where she served as the student board member as she has many times before. Superintendent Anthony Lewis thanked her for serving on his student advisory council for the past four years. Craft “asked some tough questions — the necessary questions,” Lewis said.
