A handful of tickets are still available for the second “Dolly and Desserts,” a fundraiser concert featuring Dolly Parton covers that will help a local group keep providing books to kids at no cost to their families.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book-gifting program. Children from birth to age 5 can receive an age-appropriate book in the mail once a month.

The Douglas County program began mailing books in 2020 and it currently serves more than 2,700 children. It has mailed more than 70,000 books since it began, according to a news release from event organizers.

The show will be emceed by Deja Brooks and will feature Heidi Gluck, Sally and the Hurts, Suzannah Johannes, Jenna & Martin and the group Luxem Sauder Dixey performing Dolly Parton covers, according to the release.

“Dolly and Desserts” is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 22 at Maceli’s in downtown Lawrence, 1031 New Hampshire St. The event will include a buffet of desserts and savory snacks, included in ticket prices. There will also be an auction and a cash bar.

Tickets start at $50 per person and are available for purchase at this link.

Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation selects and distributes books. The local organization receives some funding through the Kansas Children’s Cabinet but it estimates that at its current growth rate, it will need $42,000 to pay for books in 2024.

“In addition, the group has set a goal to raise funds for a one-year reserve fund,” according to the release. “This goal is to assure they never have to suspend enrollments due to lack of funds, a situation the group faced in 2022 due to the rapid enrollment growth from local families.”
