The Lawrence school district has selected Brian Workman, currently an instructional coach at Cordley Elementary, as next principal of New York Elementary and Montessori School.

Workman is in his second year at Cordley and previously served as a fourth grade teacher in 2022-23, according to a news release from the district Monday. He has previous teaching experience in Colorado, Cairo, Egypt, and Kansas City, Kansas, according to the release. He also worked at the Wyandot Center for Community Behavioral Healthcare in Kansas City for two years as a social worker.

“I am honored to serve as New York’s principal,” Workman said in the release. “It is exciting to be able to stay in a role where I get to work with the east Lawrence community and continue to build upon the early successes of the first public Montessori school in Kansas.”

Workman received his bachelor’s degree from KU and his master’s from Fort Hays State University. He’s working to complete his doctorate in educational leadership through the University of Colorado, according to the release.

“We look forward to Brian continuing to serve as an integral member of our team,” Superintendent Anthony Lewis said in the release. “His passion for joining our expanding New York Montessori community and his background as an instructional leader, educator, and social worker engaging families in supporting their children’s learning, personal growth, and well-being make him a great fit.”

Workman replaces Sunny Halsted, who took a job as a principal in Topeka. He will start in the position July 1, pending school board approval.
