Two Lawrence art markets spanning the day Saturday will aim to uplift community artists.

Community organizer and artist Moniquè Mercurio, Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation, has partnered with Haskell Indian Nations University to bring more local artists to this month’s Haskell Open Market. She hoped it could be a space for former Art Love Collective artists, which Haskell organizers welcomed, Mercurio wrote in her Facebook post about the event.

Art Love Collective recently closed its doors at 646 Vermont St. Approximately 40 artists who were part of the collective, many who sold original work out of the location, were displaced as a result.

Mercurio plans to be at the market with her beading business, MercTribe Designs, joined with several other artists and artisans. Folks will also be able to purchase food from Peaches’ Frybread.

The Haskell Open Market is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29 in Haskell’s Tommaney Library, 2500 Creek Ave. It’s free to attend.

The market was originally scheduled to be outdoors in the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum parking lot, but Mercurio said it’s been moved indoors to avoid the summer heat.

Artists interested in vending, which is free to do, can register online via a Google form. Tables and chairs will be provided to vendors. Questions can be emailed to HaskellUSDAExtension@haskell.edu.

LOLA Pride party and art market

LOLA, Lovers of Lawrence Art, is presenting its first pop-up event that’s in celebration of Pride Month.

The party and market will feature 16 local queer artists who will be selling pride-themed artwork and merchandise. One of those artists is Sam Azzaro, Mx of Bizzarre, formerly of ALC.

Deja Brooks, former Miss Gay Kansas, will give a pride storytime for all ages, and other local drag performers will join the celebration with music.

The Pride Pop-Up Party is scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 29 at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire St. in downtown Lawrence. It’s free to attend.

Refreshments will be available for purchase.

See artist features and stay updated with the event on LOLA’s Instagram page, @lolalawrence.
