Here’s a quick roundup of closures, changes, celebrations and more for the Fourth of July in Lawrence:
• The East Lawrence and Holcom Park recreation centers, Community Building and Sports Pavilion Lawrence will be closed July 4.
• Parking at meters, lots and in garages in downtown Lawrence will be free Thursday, July 4.
• Solid waste collection will be delayed by one day for customers whose trash is normally picked up on Thursday or Friday. Regular Thursday customers will have collection on Friday, and so forth. There will be no yard waste collections, bulk item pickups, rolloff services, or dumpster swaps or maintenance throughout the holiday week, Monday, July 1 through Sunday, July 7, according to a release from the city.
• Lawrence Transit buses, including fixed-route and paratransit buses, will not operate on the holiday.
• Lawrence Parks and Recreation administrative offices will be closed for the holiday. See more details about Parks & Rec programming at this link.
• The Outdoor Aquatic Center will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. on Thursday. The Indoor Aquatic Center will be open for lap swimming from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with warm water workout from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be no aquatic fitness or instructional classes on July 4.
• The Lawrence Public Library will be closed on Thursday. However, the online library is open 24/7.
• Douglas County District Court will be closed Thursday.
• City of Lawrence and Douglas County offices will be closed Thursday. There will be no Douglas County Commission meeting on Wednesday, July 3.
• There will be no lunch service for kids at the Lawrence Public Library or Lawrence Arts Center on Thursday or Friday.
• Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center’s outpatient services will be closed Thursday. If you or someone you know is in crisis, the Treatment and Recovery Center of Douglas County is available 24/7 at 1000 W. Second St. You can also call the crisis line at 988 or 785-841-2345.
Local celebrations
• The City of Lawrence’s Summerfest is set for Wednesday, July 3. The traditional fireworks show is being replaced by a drone show.
The festivities will begin with a craft festival in the air-conditioned Douglas County Fairgrounds Building 21 from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Food truck and beer sales will begin at 4 p.m., along with City Play Corps activities for children. A lineup of community musicians and bands play from 4 to 9 p.m., and the drone show will start around 9:45 p.m.

• The Lawrence City Band’s free weekly concert will have the theme of “America the Beautiful.” That’s set to start at 8 p.m. Wednesday at South Park. In the event of inclement weather, updates will be posted on the band’s Facebook page at facebook.com/LawrenceCityBand.
• The American Legion will host a ceremony starting at 11 a.m. Thursday at 3408 W. Sixth St. That will be followed by a cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, drinks and desserts starting at 11:30. The Legion suggests a donation of $5 per person.
• Eudora and Baldwin City will hold fireworks shows on July 4 and 6, respectively. Read more about them and see details on when and where fireworks are allowed in Douglas County at this link.
