Following the announcement that the superintendent has taken a position out of state, the Lawrence school board will hold a special meeting Tuesday to consider a $6,500 contract for the search to fill the job.

Superintendent Anthony Lewis was selected Saturday to lead the Durham, North Carolina school district. His resignation from Lawrence Public Schools will be effective in mid-August. That gives the board a little more than a month to find at least an interim replacement.

“The School Board will discuss the process of searching for and selecting a person for a possible interim and permanent appointment,” according to the brief meeting agenda.

The board will consider approving a $6,500 expenditure to the Kansas Association of School Boards Leadership Services “for assistance in coordinating the board’s interim superintendent search,” according to the agenda item.

The board will also hold a 30-minute executive session with Lewis invited to be present, and with possible action to follow.

The board will meet starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 2 at district offices, 110 McDonald Drive. The board does not typically allow public comment during special meetings.

See the brief agenda at this link. District spokesperson Julie Boyle said the meeting will be livestreamed on the district’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/usd497.
