The Kansas Department of Transportation has chosen a contractor to proceed with an expansion of the west leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway to four lanes.
The project will expand the 7.6-mile stretch of Kansas Highway 10 from the Iowa Street, or U.S. 59, interchange to the Sixth Street, or U.S. Highway 40, interchange to four lanes with medians.
Construction is expected to begin this fall and be completed in 2028, according to a Wednesday news release from KDOT.
It’s a stretch of K-10 where numerous fatal crashes have occurred over the years. The highway is currently one lane in each direction with no median.
“The scope of work includes but is not limited to grading and excavation, concrete paving, and construction of eight new bridges,” according to the release.
KDOT selected Emery Sapp & Sons, “a Midwest-based heavy civil construction firm,” for the contract. ESS submitted a bid of $170.6 million for the project, according to the release.
The same company was the general contractor on the eastern leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway completed in 2016, according to the release.
“This project will improve safety and ease traffic on the South Lawrence Trafficway and nearby highways,” according to the release. “Reconstruction of the corridor to four lanes will alleviate strain on surrounding streets throughout the City of Lawrence.”
