Post updated at 12:02 p.m. Monday, July 29:
Lawrence school board members will have a special meeting with a brief agenda, the district announced about six hours before the meeting start time.
Board members will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 29 to discuss and vote on whether to approve the district student handbook; consider ratifying an agreement with PAL-CWA, the classified staff union; and to hold two executive sessions.
The two executive sessions, or closed-door meetings, are to discuss personnel matters of nonelected personnel.
The second executive session is to conduct an interview with a candidate for interim superintendent. Superintendent Anthony Lewis’ last day will be Aug. 9. He was selected to lead Durham, North Carolina public schools.
The first finalist candidate to be interviewed is Larry Englebrick, currently deputy superintendent for the district.
Englebrick joined the district in March 2021 as executive director of facilities and operations. He was named interim COO for 2021-22, then named to the permanent position in 2022. He previously served as director of facilities and operations for the Kansas City, Missouri schools for 11 years, and he has taught high school in Shawnee Mission and Kansas City, Kansas schools, according to the district.
Additional finalist interviews will be announced this week, according to a news release from the district.
The board does not anticipate taking action after either executive session, according to the agenda.
The board does not generally allow public comment during special meetings but will allow comments on the proposed student handbook, according to the release.
The board will meet at district offices, 110 McDonald Drive. Meetings are also broadcast on the district’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/usd497.
