Big Boy, the largest steam railroad locomotive ever built, will pass through Union Pacific depot in North Lawrence this fall.
The 85-foot-long, 380-ton Iron Horse will take an eight-week tour across nine states, running from Sept. 8 through late October.
Big Boy stopped in Lawrence twice in 2021. It will not stop here this year, but the Lawrence station will be on its route from Kansas City, Missouri to Topeka.
Big Boy will spend the night at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, arriving at approximately 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. It will be on view there all day Wednesday, Oct. 16 as well.
It will then pass through town sometime between 9 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, according to the North Lawrence Improvement Association and the online train schedule.
Big Boy is currently at home in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but you can follow its ventures on this map once it gets moving.
