The city’s YouTube broadcast of the Lawrence City Commission meeting failed Tuesday evening because of a computer problem.
The broadcast failed around 35 minutes into the regular meeting because “several computers used for the broadcast required a restart at the same time, and that ended up disrupting the broadcast,” Maureen Brady, a spokesperson for the city, said via email Wednesday.
City staff members got the video posted to the city’s YouTube page, youtube.com/@lawrenceksvideo, and it is available to view at this link.
The city also uploads audio versions of meetings as podcasts. Those recordings are available via Soundcloud at soundcloud.com/lawrenceksaudio. This week’s meeting is available at this link.
Commission meetings are also broadcast on Midco channel 25.
Access via Zoom
Here’s how you can access a city meeting via Zoom if this issue repeats during any city meeting that is livestreaming. (Tap or click on one of the images below to zoom in.)
Firstly, you will need to download Zoom if you haven’t already. It works on most devices, and it’s available at zoom.us/download.
You do not have to turn on your microphone or camera just to view the meeting, but you will need to turn on at least your microphone when the host calls on you if you want to give public comment.
1. Visit the city’s agenda portal, online at lawrenceks.civicweb.net/portal.
2. Find the meeting you’re looking for. That will generally show up on the right side of the page under “Today’s Meetings” if you’re on a computer, or if you’re on a mobile device, scroll about halfway down the page to see the list.
3. Look at the meeting agenda for a link to register for the meeting and join via Zoom.
4. Fill in your name and email address if requested, then follow the prompts to join the meeting. It may take a moment or two for the meeting host to admit you.
Again, you do not have to turn on your microphone or camera just to view the meeting.
As each city commission meeting agenda states, “The primary format for accessing or participating in this meeting is in person at City Hall. Virtual access to view or participate in the meeting cannot be guaranteed due to potential technology issues.” But the city generally does make meetings available via Zoom, and city commissioners have even ended a meeting and postponed it when major technology issues have arisen in the past.
The Lawrence City Commission no longer broadcasts general public comment, but we record it and upload it to our site. You can view general public comment periods starting with the June 11 meeting, when the broadcasts first stopped, at this link.
During Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners approved a concept plan for a remodel of the Outdoor Aquatic Center (with a few caveats), and approved several nominations to city advisory boards.
