Just Food, the Douglas County food bank, is asking for donations to help folks get through the weekend.

As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, all the food bank’s shelves, fridges, freezers and even its warehouse are “dangerously empty,” staff members wrote in an Instagram post. They’ve already served more than 1,000 households this week, but the food bank will also be open to serve clients for six hours on Friday.

“We understand that times are tough for everyone, but it’s heartbreaking to see shopper after shopper come in and leave with very little,” Just Food staff members wrote in the post. “Our friends, neighbors, and community partners rely on Just Food, and right now, we are far from meeting the need.”

The organization spends $40,000 per month to keep shelves stocked. “This month, that amount didn’t last us three weeks,” according to the post.

Donation hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday for anyone who’s able to help. Otherwise, staff will be back at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the post.

“Anything helps and is deeply appreciated,” according to the post.
