Lawrence police have determined there’s no credible threat after a Billy Mills Middle School student allegedly made a comment in class about bringing a gun to school.
“We know that students can make poor choices and say things that are inappropriate or that they do not mean,” Principal Andrew Taylor said in an email to school families Tuesday morning. “That said, our staff takes all comments about guns and school violence seriously and works with police to investigate them.”
The school has contacted the student’s family, according to the email. District policies include consequences for “behaviors that disrupt our learning environment,” and the school will “take appropriate disciplinary action and develop a plan of support for this student,” Taylor wrote.
“We understand that it is concerning when students talk about guns and school violence. It concerns us, too,” Taylor’s email continues. “We ask for your support in helping our staff reassure students that they are safe at school and that they should continue to tell an adult at school if they have any safety concerns. I appreciate the students who brought this to our attention, so we could investigate and take appropriate action.”
