A KU professor on Sunday will share his knowledge of the “founding, near abandonment, rededication and expansion” of the Beni Israel Cemetery in Eudora.

David Katzman, KU professor emeritus of American studies and Jewish studies, will “share what is known of its history as well as the mysteries it still holds,” according to a news release from event organizers.

Attendees can learn about the influences of Jewish immigrants in the founding of Eudora, and some of the prominent people who are interred at the cemetery.

The Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation took custody of the cemetery in 1978 “after a period of abandonment and neglect,” according to an earlier news release. A recent grant from the Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council’s annual grant program is helping to preserve and upgrade the site.

The tour is set for 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 at the cemetery, 1301 East 2100 Road in Eudora. It’s free to attend, but those who wish to go should register at this link.

Attendees are encouraged to bring portable chairs if they’ll need to sit during the talk.

A rain date is set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. Event organizers will notify registrants by 1 p.m. Sunday if it will be necessary to postpone.
