Kiddos from Cordley Elementary and their peers wowed crowds with their dance routines during the Boys & Girls Club’s Lights On! event.

Cordley took first with their performance to a medley of two iconic pop stars from the new millennium, Jennifer Lopez and Will Smith, according to a news release from BGC. The event’s theme was “In My Y2K Era.”

Langston Hughes Elementary came in second with their dance to an international mix of Spice Girls and Simple Plan. And Hillcrest Elementary earned third with their *NSYNC and Brandy routine.

“I love how uninhibited the kids are,” Laci Maltbie, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, said in the release. “I want them to stay that happy and confident forever.”

The event was held Thursday in the auditorium of Haskell Indian Nations University.

Many of the young dancers never had the opportunity to dance before, but they learned a choreographed routine and worked together in teams, according to the release.

“What resulted was around 150 kids braving the stage with impressive courage and dancing their hearts out,” according to the release.

Lights On Afterschool is an annual event that celebrates after school programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities, according to the release.
