Lawrence women and allies will rally for women’s rights at South Park days ahead of the historic Nov. 5 election.
The rally is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the gazebo, which is on the east side of South Park.
Those in attendance will “hear from an array of speakers about Women’s Rights,” according to the rally’s Facebook group.
The rally aims to offer engaging conversations about women’s rights and equality, serve as an inclusive space where everyone can share their story and inspire people to get out the vote.
“Local supporters of Women’s Rights have been organizing since August to get out the vote on November 5th,” according to the group page. “We support electing Vice President Kamala Harris for President and down ballot candidates supporting women’s rights.”
Those expected to speak include Melinda Lavon, chair of the Douglas County Democratic Party; Dena Sattler, candidate for Kansas Senate District 3; Rep. Barbara Ballard; Brooklynne Mosley, presumed representative-elect for Kansas House District 46; Dr. Ashley Bloom; Amii Castle, attorney and KU professor; Ursula Minor, president of the Lawrence chapter of the NAACP; and Sen. Marci Francisco, incumbent running to represent District 2.
Local band Sugarfoot Detour will open the rally “with a special song” around 10:45 a.m., and close it out around 1 p.m.
The rally will be held rain or shine. Some rain ponchos may be available, but those who attend may wish to plan ahead. Lawn chairs and/or blankets are also recommended.
