6th Street traffic patterns to change Monday; drivers should expect delays

As construction work on Sixth Street in downtown Lawrence continues, the traffic patterns will change Monday, and drivers should anticipate delays.

Work will begin at 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, weather permitting, “in an effort to minimize the disruption to traffic as much as possible and to complete the most challenging spots before the morning rush hour traffic,” according to a city traffic update on Friday.

The changes are for asphalt paving work in the area of Sixth Street between Tennessee and Massachusetts streets.

City contractors will temporarily close several locations as this work progresses, including the following, according to the update:

  • Vermont Street from Sixth Street to just south of the parking lot entrances, and set up a right turn only north of Sixth for Vermont Street’s southbound lanes;
  • Massachusetts Street from Sixth Street to just south of the crosswalk; and
  • Sixth Street’s outside eastbound and westbound lanes, from Tennessee Street to Massachusetts Street.

But those closures will not occur simultaneously “and will be phased in a way to minimize disruptions,” according to the update. “One lane of traffic will remain open on each bridge to allow drivers to travel north and south, but delays will occur.”

The city encourages drivers to use Tennessee Street to access downtown, and to avoid this stretch of Sixth Street where paving will occur.

“As always, we appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents and businesses as we move ever closer to the completion of our substantial 6th St. improvements project!” the update stated.
