A shelter that will aim to help Lawrence families find stability will soon welcome the public to an open house and ribbon cutting celebration.

Family Promise of Lawrence held a groundbreaking for the project in May and is now nearly ready to start moving families into Mt. Hope Shelter so they’ll have a safe place to stay as they work to find permanent housing.

The celebration is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the shelter, 200 Mt. Hope Court. It’s just east of the DoubleTree Hotel. Parking will be available in the hotel’s lot, according to the organization.

“Join us as we celebrate this beautiful new space, created with care and purpose to support families in need in our community,” FPL said in a Facebook post. “… None of this would have been possible without the dedication and support of our donors, volunteers, and local partners.”

According to early plans for the project, the shelter will include six bedrooms that each have a queen bed and a bunk bed set, and each bedroom will have its own bathroom. The maximum occupancy will be 24 guests plus staff.

The space also has a kitchen, dining area and a playroom for children. Executive Director Brenda Wahl described it as “a great place for families to be families together.”
