Lawrence holiday markets: Where to shop for gifts that support local makers

From the $20 and Under Flea Market and Pendleton’s Country Market Holiday Open House to a new KU Student Art Sale and refreshed Winter Inclusive Market, Lawrence makers are ready to help folks check off their gift lists. 

Here are almost 20 Lawrence-area opportunities to shop local and support artists, farmers and small businesses. 

These markets are broken down by week to make this guide a little easier to navigate.

Before Thanksgiving: 

• The $20 and Under Flea Market, hosted by Groupie Candles, is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 inside Repetition Coffee, 512 E. Ninth St., near Ninth and New Jersey streets. “Skip the big box stores, save some cash, and support local makers,” the hosts write. Cash and masks are recommended but not required. 

The last Haskell Open Market of the semester will include products, art and food from a variety of vendors. That’s set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at Stidham Union on Haskell Indian Nations University’s campus; see a map here. The holiday bazaar will be Dec. 7 — see more details below. 

• Pendleton’s Country Market will kick off its holiday open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24. The market is at 1446 East 1850 Road, about a mile east of the edge of town and a mile north of Kansas Highway 10 (see it on a map here). It will be open the same hours the following weekend. Thanksgiving weekend, Thursday, Nov. 28 – Sunday, Dec. 1:

• Bizarre Bazaar has been an ongoing Lawrence tradition since 1988. Organizers say the show originally began as an open house for a few artists to sell their quirky art — hence the market’s name — and it was the “‘hippie love vibe’ that started this whole show.” It continues this year from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. (If you’re out and about downtown on Saturday, Nov. 23, keep an eye out for some of the “Biz Baz” artists on a stroll.)

• Plantaland, a popup “tropical holiday mall” at Vinland Valley Nursery, will feature fresh cut Christmas trees, wreaths, poinsettias, garden gifts, terrarium-making, special holiday drinks and much more. That’s set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1 at 1606 North 600 Road in Baldwin City (see a map here). Check out the vendors who will be present at this link

Van Go’s Adornment will celebrate its young apprentice artists with an opening reception set for 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at Van G0, 715 New Jersey St. in East Lawrence. The annual art show and sale will have open hours continuing through Thursday, Dec. 19; see this article for the complete schedule. 

• Pine’s Garden & Market will have a vendors market and free ornament decorating for little ones at the store’s holiday market, set for 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1320 N. Third St. (see a map here). They will also have fresh cut Christmas trees, wreaths and garland coming in from North Carolina. 

• Pendleton’s Country Market’s holiday open house continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The market is at 1446 East 1850 Road, about a mile east of the edge of town and a mile north of Kansas Highway 10 (see it on a map here). See a list of vendors at this link

Week of Monday, Dec. 2 – Sunday, Dec. 8: 

• Art Emergency Holiday Market: Two dozen local arts will share their skills in painting, pottery, weaving, paper, quilting, jewelry, mosaics, garments, wood and more. That’s set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 at Art Emergency, 721 E. Ninth St. in East Lawrence. 

The Holiday Extravaganza craft fair hosted by Lawrence Parks and Recreation will feature handmade and commercial goods such as jewelry, paintings, textiles, pottery, home décor and more from local artists and entrepreneurs. That’s set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at Sports Pavilion Lawrence, 100 Rock Chalk Lane. 

• Haskell Indian Nations University’s Holiday Bazaar will feature a number of local artists, including Shelley Bointy, TK Richardson, Iris Cliff and many more. That’s set for 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at Stidham Union on Haskell’s campus; see a map here

• Astra Art & Maker’s Market is in its second year. Check the group’s Instagram, @astra_artmarket, as it’s rolling out artist introductions. This year’s market is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 at Van Go, 715 New Jersey St. in East Lawrence. 

Week of Monday, Dec. 9 – Sunday, Dec. 15: 

• KU Student Art Sale: This two-day event at the Off-Site Art Space, 924 Delaware St. in East Lawrence, will feature works made by University of Kansas students, including prints, ceramics, jewelry and paintings. It will kick off with a preview night from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, featuring light refreshments and live portrait drawings by student artists. Family-friendly fun will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, including balloon animals for all. Proceeds will support the students and art clubs. 

The Lawrence Farmers’ Market’s Holiday Farmers Market is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Open Pavilion at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. New this year will be a gift wrapping station, and there will be expanded parking. Read more about it at this link

• Winterlight Faire, an annual tradition of the Prairie Moon Waldorf School, is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. “At this family-friendly, old-fashioned event, you and your children may dip your own beeswax candle, meet the magical Queen Winter, have your face painted, saddle up for a Walking Lead Line Ride, and more!” The school is at 1853 East 1600 Road, just east of the Lawrence Regional Airport (see a map here). 

• LOLA Giant — that’s Lovers of Lawrence Art — is “going all out” for its 20th anniversary market. That’s set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 at Van Go, 715 New Jersey St. in East Lawrence. Learn more and see a vendor list at this link. There will be food from Wild Alive Ferments, coffee from Streamline Coffee and sweet treats from The Pastry Lounge. 

• Lawrence Art Guild’s Holiday Art Fair is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Cider Gallery, 810 Pennsylvania St. The annual show will feature “truly unique, handcrafted holiday gifts” created by guild members. 

Week of Monday, Dec. 16 – Sunday, Dec. 22: 

• The Inclusive Winter Market will feature around 100 artisans and small businesses selling their handmade jewelry, paintings, ledger artwork, food and more. That’s set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive. Read more about the market at this link
