Floyd Kent Kalb, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully in his home in Canon City, CO, on November 2, 2024, at the age of 85.

Kent was born on March 3, 1939, in Wellsville, Kansas. Kent was the son of Lester R. Kalb and Minnie Faye Bell Kalb. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Marti, and his granddaughter, Amanda. Kent is survived by his son, Fyras T. Kalb (Heather), of Bismarck, ND; grandson, Kody L. Kalb, of Williston, ND; great granddaughter, Paisley, of Williston, ND; and numerous extended family members who will miss him dearly.

Kent’s life was marked by a strong work ethic, a dedication to his family, and a deep love for the land. He graduated from Baldwin City High School in Kansas in 1957, before going on to earn his bachelor’s degree in history and zoology in 1961. He attained his J.D. from University of Kansas, College of Law. His career spanned many years, starting with work in the Nebraska State Government’s tax division. Kent dedicated over 40 years to Union Pacific Railroad as Chief Tax Counsel, and he served on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Public Expenditure Council, becoming Chairman in 1993. He also contributed to his local community through his work on the Park County Planning Commission in Colorado, as well as serving as Chairman of the Tax Council of the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry from 1985 -1988. Kent’s accomplishments were widely recognized, earning him the Distinguished Service Award from Kansas Governor Robert Bennett in 1978 and the Good Samaritan Award from Teller County Colorado Cares. His legacy of service and integrity is a testament to the impact he made throughout his career and personal life.

Outside of his professional life, Kent had a variety of interests. He was an avid football fan and enjoyed watching both football games and University of Kansas basketball. He supported his son in motocross, had a passion for cattle ranching, and was a long-time member of the Elite Fitness Club in Canon City. Kent enjoyed life’s simpler pleasures, such as sharing a cold beer, and he had a special fondness for his dogs, Contessa and Tribute. Kent and his wife, Marti, loved traveling the world, with New Zealand being his favorite destination. Kent’s deep sense of community and commitment to his family will always be remembered. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of hard work, love, and kindness. His family and friends will forever hold him in their hearts. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home.
