Reminder: Final day of Sunrise Project’s porch pantry is Tuesday; community meals coming up

Tuesday is the final day Sunrise Project’s free porch pantry will be open.

The Lawrence nonprofit designed to couple social connections with food equity announced in August that it would have to move from its current headquarters at 1501 Learnard Ave. because of a change in the property’s ownership. With that also came a push for social connection.

Sunrise Project announced in November that it would end its meal deliveries and close its porch pantry after 2024, hoping to “bring more people to us, to socially connect.”

Executive Director Melissa Freiburger said Monday that there are no updates yet on a new location. She previously said the organization will ease into its transition.

Free community meals continue at Sunrise Project on the first and third Wednesdays of every month, with the exception of holidays.

The first two meals of 2025 will be on the second and third Wednesdays. A New Year’s Day-themed meal is on the menu from 5 to 7 p.m. on Jan 8, and chickpea sweet potato curry will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 15.

Beginning in the new year, the Sunrise Project cafe will be open during one Sunday every month, with activities to be announced.

The first cafe event of the new year is centered on community art. It’s set for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5. People are encouraged to bring a project they’ve been working on or use supplies provided there.
