The Lawrence school board is set to meet Tuesday for an update on the search for the next permanent superintendent.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 at district offices, 110 McDonald Drive.

Lawrence Board of Education President Kelly Jones has called a special meeting at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, in the boardroom at the Educational Support Center, 110 McDonald Drive.

The board will hear an update from the Kansas Association of School Boards about the ongoing superintendent search.

“Representatives from KASB met with school staff, parents, and community members in a series of focus groups yesterday,” district spokesperson Julie Boyle said via email Wednesday. “KASB also has shared a survey, open through Friday, to collect additional community input about leadership skills, personal qualities, and characteristics desired in a long-term superintendent.”

School board members voted 6-0 in November to approve a contract for an amount not to exceed $11,500 to be paid to KASB for the search.

Board members voted on Aug. 12 to hire Interim Superintendent Jeanice Swift to fill the position vacated by former Superintendent Anthony Lewis. She is contracted to serve in her position through the 2024-25 school year.

According to a tentative timeline the board is working with, KASB and an ad hoc committee will collaborate through March to find the permanent superintendent, who will begin next year, 2025-26.

The board will not hear public comment during the meeting, though the public is welcome to attend.
