As the sky prepares to drop another several inches of snow on Lawrence, there is good news for those dreaming of warmer days in the garden.
Lawrence’s compost facility, at 1420 E. 11th St., will open for the season on Saturday, March 1.
The facility will open for the first self-load Saturday event of the year from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering compost and woodchips from locally collected yard waste, according to a news release from the city.
“As one of the City’s most popular environmental services, the Compost Facility provides Lawrence residents with an opportunity to drop off yard waste and pick up nutrient-rich compost and woodchips to improve soil health, reduce landfill waste, and contribute to a greener community,” according to the release.
There are city-load events planned for the first Saturdays of four months, if materials allow: April 5, May 3, June 7 and October 4. Self-load Saturdays are generally held on the other weeks from March through mid-December, though the schedule is subject to change.
“To ensure smooth operations and accommodate demand, city-load events will have a one-scoop limit until 10:30 a.m. or until the line clears 11th Street, at staff’s discretion,” according to the release. “Additionally, no self-loading or yard waste drop-offs will be allowed during city-load events to streamline operations and improve traffic flow.”
Yard waste dropoff, self-load events and the April city-load event are limited to Lawrence residents, and proof of residency is required. The other city-load events will be open to anyone, according to the release.
Self-loaded materials cost $10 for more than 20 gallons per trip, or less than 20 gallons free; city-loaded material is $15 per scoop; and fees for yard waste dropoffs are $10, or $20 for extra large dropoffs (such as those using a truck and trailer or dump truck), according to the release. The facility accepts cash only.
