Heavy snow possible; extreme cold expected in Lawrence

Douglas County could see more snow over the next few days, and dangerously cold wind chills could reach as low as -25° by Thursday.

There’s a 20% chance of snow Sunday night and Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka. The likelihood of snow grows Monday night into Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the single digits with a low of 1° Monday night, accompanied by winds of 10-15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph.

There’s a 70% chance of snow Tuesday, and the forecast shows a high of 6° during the day followed by a low of -7° overnight.

Douglas County has a 60-70% chance of exceeding 3 inches of snow and a 30-40% chance of exceeding 6 inches of show going into Wednesday morning, according to an NWS update from Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures will barely barely break single digits from Tuesday through Thursday, according to the forecast, with the lowest — -12° — expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Wind chills could be as cold as -10° to -15° Tuesday, growing colder over the next few days. Thursday’s wind chills could be as cold as -25°, according to NWS. Frostbite and serious health issues can occur within minutes when temperatures are that low.

Friday and Saturday are expected to be mostly sunny and warm up a little bit, with highs of 21° and 33° in the forecast.

The city has snow information and a map at lawrenceks.org/snow that shows information about road conditions and where snowplows have been. The city typically begins snow and ice control for residential roadways when 2 or more inches of snowfall or icing occurs.
