The City of Lawrence has launched a new searchable database of burial records for Oak Hill, Memorial Park and Maple Grove cemeteries.
The website allows people to search and locate burial sites, including walking and driving instructions. It includes functions to upload photos and add more information about the people buried there.
There have been more than 64,000 burials, dating back to the city’s founding, according to a news release from the city. More than 1,000 Potter’s Field burials at Oak Hill are now viewable and searchable for the first time, according to the city.
“Staff has been working hard to ensure the accuracy of the burial information. While they have spent years working on this transition, the cemetery staff is counting on community members to ask questions and provide feedback if they notice discrepancies,” according to the release.
Burials will be added in real time, and upcoming burials are also noted on the site.
“We’re excited to launch this new cemetery website, making it easier than ever to find loved ones and explore Lawrence’s history,” Luis Ruiz, director of parks, recreation and culture said in the release. “This mobile resource enhances accessibility, provides meaningful memorial pages and helps connect our community to the stories of those who came before us. I appreciate the dedication of City staff in bringing this project to life.”

The website also offers guides to use the search functions on mobile devices and on desktop computers.
Those who have questions can reach out to cemetery offices at 785-832-3451 or via email at cemeteries@lawrenceks.org. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
