Sharon Kay (Flakus) Haupt, age 74 of Lawrence, Kansas passed away February 15, 2025 at her home in Lawrence. Memorial services will be 10:30AM, Saturday, March 15, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont, in Lawrence, with visitation Friday, March 14 from 5:30 to 7:30PM and Saturday at 9:30AM prior to the service. Family will gather for inurnment at the Wellsville Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the LMH Health Cancer Center in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
Sharon Kay Haupt was born May 3, 1950 in Pickstown, South Dakota, the daughter of Lawrence James and Velma Kathryn (Perkins) Flakus. She grew up in southeastern South Dakota with her family before moving to Wellsville, Kansas her Junior year of high school. She graduated from Wellsville High School in 1968. Sharon went to work at Hallmark Cards in Lawrence after high school where she was a machine operator for 18 years. After that, given her love of all things “Hallmark”, she managed the Bowen’s Hallmark Store in downtown Lawrence for 4 years. Along with her ardent love of ducks and geese home decor, she collected all things Hallmark, from cards to Christmas ornaments to the entire snowman collection. Sharon then went to work as the drive-thru manager at Douglas County Bank in Lawrence where she worked for 21 years until her retirement in 2015. Sharon had lived in Lawrence for over 40 years.
On May 31, 1974, Sharon married Leslie “Les” Allan Haupt in Baldwin City, Kansas. They shared 48 years of marriage together before his passing on January 6, 2022. To this union, one son, Dustin William, was born.
Sharon was an avid bowler. She was a Lawrence Women’s Bowling Association Director and bowled on teams from the late 1970’s through the 1990’s. She competed in several Kansas State Championship Team competitions. Sharon was also a member of the WIBC (Women’s International Bowling Congress) where she competed in several national championship team tournaments. Sharon loved the Chiefs and was a season ticket holder for many years. She loved KU and was an enthusiastic Jayhawks fan. Sharon was also a skilled cook and loved to be in the kitchen. Sharon was the current president of the Longleaf Townhomes Association where she has lived for over 10 years. Sharon was a beloved friend to many.
Sharon is survived by her son and son-in-law, Dustin Haupt and Ryan Spiralke of Nashville, TN; her grand-puppy, Teddy; brother, Lawrence Flakus, Jr. and wife Janet of Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Eugene Flakus and wife Glenna of Lawrence, KS; sister, Mary Stewart and husband John of Hutchinson, KS; sister, Barbara Flakus of Overland Park, KS; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Richard Flakus; brother, Charles Flakus; sister, Patricia Jones; and an infant sister, Cecelia Flakus.
