Panera Bread in west Lawrence set to open

A new Panera Bread is soon to open in west Lawrence, and the cafe will offer one free bagel per month for a year to the first 50 guests on opening day.

The cafe will open Monday, March 10 at 4661 Bauer Farm Drive, near Sixth Street and Champion Lane.

It will have a drive-thru in addition to seating inside the cafe, which will serve “signature menu items guests have come to know and love,” according to a news release announcing the store opening. It will add about 50 jobs to the local economy, according to the release.

Both the west Lawrence location and the store at 520 W. 23rd St. are owned by Flynn Group, which owns and operates more than 130 Panera cafes in eight states, according to the release. Those include locations in the Kansas City area and Johnson County.

The business’s dining room will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the drive-thru will be open from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily.

Here’s some of the fine print on the bagel giveaway: Customers must be ages 16 and up and must be present in line when the store opens at 6 a.m. March 10. A purchase is necessary, and the offer can’t be combined with other discounts. The “first 50” punch card is only valid at the west Lawrence Panera.

The building was previously home to “flip’d,” a pilot of a “fast-casual” breakfast concept by IHOP. It opened in September 2021 and did not last long. IHOP retired the concept by June 2023. Before that, the building housed Zaxby’s.

Both Lawrence Panera locations are currently hiring for multiple positions, some of which include benefits and offer a living wage, according to online job listings.
