The Lawrence Public Library has announced Johann Hari as this year’s Ross and Marianna Beach Author, and he’s set to speak in Lawrence in June.

Hari is the bestselling author of Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention — and How to Think Deeply Again.

The annual author event is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 11 at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.

“In Stolen Focus, Hari explores why so many of us struggle to concentrate in today’s world. He investigates the impact of technology, stress, and modern life on our attention — and more importantly, what we can do to reclaim it,” according to the library’s announcement. “With so many of us consistently glued to our phones and other devices, Hari’s talk is sure to spark some compelling community discussion.”

Hari has written for he New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian, the Spectator, Le Monde Diplomatique, the Sydney Morning Herald, and Politico, according to the book’s website, and he’s twice been named Amnesty International’s National Newspaper Journalist of the Year.

He’s also given two TED talks, ‘Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong’ and ‘This Could Be Why You Are Depressed or Anxious.’

Library Director Brad Allen said in the release that the Beach Author program “brings some of the greatest living writers to Lawrence, and we’re so excited to continue the tradition by welcoming Johann Hari this summer.”
