A Lawrence teacher has been named as a 2024-25 Lied Center IMPACT Award recipient for her dedication to arts education.
Trish Averill Neuteboom has been recognized for her “great impact on the next generation of performers in the Lawrence community,” the Lied Center announced in a news release Wednesday.
Averill Neuteboom teaches creative arts and speech and drama at Southwest Middle School and works with community programs, including the Lied Center’s 3rd Grade Theatre Arts Day and the Lawrence Arts Center’s Summer Youth Theatre.
After earning her degree in musical theatre and directing from the University of Northern Colorado, Averill Neuteboom earned her master’s degree in education from Baker University, according to the release. She has directed and taught theatre for 25 years, and she began her career in the Lawrence school district in 2006. She’s also a working actress and director in Lawrence and the Kansas City area.
Each season, the Lied Center gives the award to one artist or group for their service to performing arts, and one Lawrence school district educator for their service to youth. Past IMPACT Award winners and Lawrence school district partners help the Lied Center select the arts educator every year.
It’s tradition that both honorees receive their awards during the winning artist’s Lied Center’s performance, which this year is the New York-based Paul Taylor Dance Company.
“Paul Taylor Dance Company represents the gold standard of American modern dance in performance, education and advocacy,” Lied Center Executive Director Derek Kwan said in the release. “Trish Averill Neuteboom has affected the lives of countless Lawrence Public School students over the last twenty years, spreading the joy of theatre arts. We are honored to recognize them.”
Paul Taylor Dance Company’s performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive. Tickets cost $14 to $21 for students and youth and $25 to $40 for adults, depending on selected seating. Those can be purchased on the Lied Center’s website or in person at the ticket office.
