Hundreds of Lawrence community members gathered at Ninth and Massachusetts Saturday as part of a nationwide movement directing Donald Trump and Elon Musk to take their “hands off” many facets of Americans’ lives.

That includes Social Security, allies, Medicare, veterans, parks, colleges, libraries, free speech, our bodies, our history and more, according to one protester’s sign.

More than 1,200 “Hands Off!” demonstrations are happening across the country Saturday, the Associated Press reported.

“Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them. We are fighting back!” messaging from organizers stated. “They’re taking everything they can get their hands on — our health care, our data, our jobs, our services — and daring the world to stop them. This is a crisis, and the time to act is now.”

Protesters downtown at one point sang “God Bless America”; then chants of “Hey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go” broke out.

Community members also continue to hold weekly protests starting at noon Sundays along Massachusetts Street at South Park and at the Ninth Street intersection.
