The City of Lawrence will not take requests for new crossing guard locations during the 2025-26 school year as working group members continue to evaluate 2024-25 requests.

The city uses a policy approved in July 2024 to evaluate community members’ requests for placement of crossing guards.

The local Safe Routes to Schools working group is still evaluating requested sites based on submissions from the 2024-25 school year, according to a city news release.

“Unfortunately, due to weather and hiring challenges, we were unable to pilot some of the requested locations this year,” according to the release. “As a result, we will be suspending new crossing guard requests for the 2025-2026 school year until we complete pending evaluations.

“Our goal is to staff the remaining publicly requested pilot locations from 2024-2025,” the release continued. “We intend to assess these sites and review existing crossing guard locations as part of the regular five-year cycle to ensure they continue to meet the necessary criteria.”

The intersections at West 27th Street and Inverness Drive and Wildflower Drive both qualify for crossing guards, but the city has not been able to fill those positions, according to the release.
