A family-friendly tradition at the Dole Institute will welcome kids of all ages Saturday for egg hunts, storytime, music and lessons in eastern European egg decoration.
The celebration is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at the Dole Institute of Politics, 2350 Petefish Drive. Easter egg hunts are set to begin at 10:30, 11 and 11:30 a.m., noon, and 12:30 p.m. It’s free to attend, and all are welcome.
The “Easter Egg Roll” tradition started at the White House in 1878.
Congress had passed a law prohibiting Capitol grounds from being used as a children’s playground, according to the Dole’s website. But President Rutherford B. Hayes issued an order to allow kids to play on the building’s grounds for the Easter holiday. The Dole has included the event in its annual programming since 2016.
Folks with the University of Kansas Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies will join the Dole’s celebration this year.
“Participants will see examples of Ukrainian pysanky, learn about the different types of egg art in Eastern Europe including various techniques and design symbolism,” according to their Facebook event page. “Attendees can also decorate their own craft egg (not breakable!) using traditional designs or their own imagination.”
CREES will be in the Simons Media Room.
The event will also include Dottie, the Lawrence Public Library’s bookmobile; games, crafts and a photo area; storytime with Yari at 10:15 and 10:45 a.m. in Hansen Hall; and live music from Jim Cosgrove on the southeast lawn from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
