Haskell Greenhouse seeks volunteers for wetlands restoration day

Indigenous land stewards caring for the Haskell Wetlands are inviting all interested volunteers to join them for an evening of ecosystem restoration this week.

The event is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5. Although the Haskell Greenhouse will provide attendees with tools and protective equipment, “closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a water source are required” for volunteers to participate, per an Instagram post. Participants are also welcome to bring their own tools.

Event organizers aim to remove invasive species during this gathering. As such, “Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn methods of removal and about various native species, while connecting with the community,” according to the post.

This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize biodiversity and promote the growth of native species in the wetlands, which have been historically disrupted by invasive species and detrimental farming practices.

The wetlands are located along South Perimeter Road on Haskell Indian Nations University land. The greenhouse team recommends entering from this point along 31st Street at the southern perimeter of the acreage for greater accessibility. Attendees who approach from the north should plan to walk over pallets.
