Trans Lawrence Coalition is teaming up with Loud Light and Equality Kansas to host an event exploring the national and local ramifications of anti-transgender legislation and recent court rulings.
In June, the Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gender-affirming health care for minors are constitutional in United States v. Skrmetti.
Kansas legislators implemented their own ban on health care for transgender minors earlier this year, which is being challenged in a lawsuit filed by the national ACLU and ACLU of Kansas. D.C. Hiegert, of the ACLU of Kansas, will be one of the speakers at the event.
The event, called “After the Gavel: Trans Futures in Kansas,” seeks to demystify the impact of the Skrmetti decision, while “clarifying the impact federal decisions will have on current litigation in our state and what that means for trans Kansas, their rights, and their communities,” according to the event page.
“This is a painful blow not just for our community, but for every American’s right to bodily autonomy and respect for privacy in our researched and well-advised healthcare decisions,” the TLC team wrote in a newsletter. “This fight is far from over though, and we are mobilizing in response.”
Also in June, transgender Kansans found that they were unable to change gender markers on their IDs. Residents expressed confusion over the prohibition, as a recent Kansas Court of Appeals ruling currently upholds transgender Kansans’ rights to change details on their IDs to align with their gender identity.
TLC has been monitoring changes related to ID markers. In collaboration with other event hosts, they will provide an update on the issue during “After the Gavel.”
The event page states, “Whether you’re looking for legal insights, support networks, or ways to get involved, this event will equip you with the knowledge and resources to join us in the fight for trans rights, visibility, and liberation!”
“After the Gavel” will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 14. The event is free to attend. Sign up on the online registration page here.
