Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.
Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.
Kiba, a 7 1/2-year old English bulldog, has been at the Lawrence Humane Society for a total of 18 months. It’s been rough-going for this gentle giant, but he is still a good boy through and through.
Kiba was first surrendered in December 2023 because his owner faced housing issues. After nine months at the shelter, he was adopted by a loving KU student.
The student’s landlord unfortunately decided that 77-pound Kiba had to go due to his size, so after just two months, he was surrendered again. It’s been nine months and Kiba is still hoping to find his family.

He has also had foster stays end because of his humans’ changing life circumstances. Not once has he been sent back to the shelter for behavioral issues.
On Mass Street Mutt outings, he’s been described as “funny, independent, sweetheart, lovable, playful, curious, good boy, kind, sweet, silly, energetic, happy, easygoing, and friendly.” He gets easily winded as a bulldog, so he enjoys an easy hike or the slow pace of daily life. If his human works from home, he’ll sleep at their feet all day.
He is happiest “next to you on the couch, snuggled up with a blankie,” according to the shelter.
Kiba used to be quite fond of his canine peers until a neighbor dog in his first home broke into the back yard and attacked him. He needs to be the only pet in the home, but shows no aggression toward other dogs on walks, ignoring them completely.

This bulldog is crate- and cot-trained, excellent on a leash, doesn’t beg for food and gets on famously with kids and all people.
Thanks to a promotion at the humane society, Kiba’s adoption fee is $25. He is house trained, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. While the shelter would love to find his forever home, they’re open to long-term foster solutions.
Past pup update
Marley the marvelous pooch and Sarah, a 1-year old sweetie, are still waiting to meet their new humans. Both have current adoption fees of $25.
Those interested in adopting Kiba can email the Lawrence Humane Society’s adoptions team at adoptions@lawrencehumane.org or call 785-843-6835.
Potential fosters can email the Foster Coordinator at foster@lawrencehumane.org and fill out an application here. The Lawrence Humane Society provides fosters with all necessary supplies and food, and they cover bills for medical care, behavioral support and more.
People can also go straight to the shelter at 1805 E. 19th St. to meet him. The Humane Society is open to potential adopters from noon to 6 p.m. every day.
