The Lawrence Schools Foundation will soon host its second annual Kids Expo, offering creative activities for families, free screenings, free shoes, back-to-school supplies and more for students who need them.

The event is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at district offices, 110 McDonald Drive in Lawrence. There will also be prize drawings, giveaways, food and entertainment.

According to Dena Johnston, the foundation’s executive director, last year’s event featured 50 businesses and organizations, including Dottie, the Lawrence Public Library’s bookmobile, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department’s mobile unit, free food, live music and inflatables with KU Athletics.

“Last year’s event brought in more than 1,000 attendees and we expect this year to be even bigger,” Johnston said.

Organizers are also seeking volunteers to assist with the shoe drive and distribution by unpacking and sorting shoes to ensure a smooth distribution process.
