Lawrence Humane Pet of the Week: Whisky, a sensitive soul, is a pleasure to have in doggy playgroups

Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.

Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.

For those who were called “old souls” or “a pleasure to have in class,” Whisky might just be the perfect dog. A 1 1/2-year-old Great Dane mix, she is a shy, sensitive and low-maintenance lady looking to share her affection.

Whisky came to the shelter five months ago as a traumatized stray. Due to her timid and nervous nature, shelter staff encourage potential adopters to give her time to warm up to new people.

It may take a little while, but once her guard is down, adopters will get to meet a “calm, curious, … affectionate, chill, and laid back dog,” according to her Mass Street Mutts friends.

This pup loves a moderately paced walk just as much as curling up on the couch or sitting at her human’s feet while they work.

“Her personality is truly lovely and everyone who has taken her for an outing or as a short-term foster has absolutely fallen in love with her,” said Elina Alterman, director of development and communications at Lawrence Humane Society.

As a Great Dane mix, Whisky has many of the iconic Scooby Doo features while only weighing 55 pounds. Still, she shouldn’t be with children under 12  — she underestimates her size in her enthusiasm to express affection, and might accidentally bowl small tots over.

She also participates in daily dog playgroups at the humane society and can live with other dogs. Just like humans want to vet their roommates, Whisky will need to meet any potential pooch siblings. LHS staff can facilitate doggy introductions and will provide behavioral support even after adoption.

Whisky is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go home with the right person for a $25 adoption fee.

Past pup update

Little Miss Acrobat Sarah found a loving family who fell in love with her personality outside of her kennel anxiety.

Marley and Kiba are still looking for their forever homes. Marley is a smart guy with impressive muzzle training. LHS staff know that adopting Kiba can be tricky since he needs to be the only dog in the home, and they’re maintaining hope that the right folks will come along.

Those interested in adopting Whisky can email the Lawrence Humane Society’s adoptions team at adoptions@lawrencehumane.org or call 785-843-6835.

Potential foster parents can email the Foster Coordinator at foster@lawrencehumane.org and fill out an application here. The Lawrence Humane Society provides foster parents with all necessary supplies and food, and they cover bills for medical care, behavioral support and more.

People can also go straight to the shelter at 1805 E. 19th St. to meet her. The Humane Society is open to potential adopters from noon to 6 p.m. every day.
