The Paper Plains Zine Fest will return to Lawrence this weekend with workshops, a cat-themed hangout, an art fair and more.

The fourth annual Zine Fest continues a celebration of culture built around the short, self-published booklets, according to a news release. Rachel Gibson, Lawrence artist and event planning committee member, said the event will connect folks with their local art communities.

“Zines are a creative medicine that give inspiration and hope, so if you are in need of that these days, Paper Plains Zine Fest has got the weekend full of events, talks, workshops and vendors for you,” Gibson said in the release.

Due to last year’s success, the Paper Plains Zine Fest is expending from two to three days of programming, set for Friday through Sunday, Aug. 29 to 31 across several Lawrence venues. All programs are free, but some on the first two days require advance registration.

• Friday, Aug. 29, or day 1 of Zine Fest, will include a tour of the Spencer Research Library Zine Collection and a printmaking workshop at KU Colorbar Open Studio. The day will wrap with a Purr-zine Swap at Espurresso Cat Cafe. Learn more about day 1 programming, and register for select events here.

• Saturday, Aug. 30 will have workshops, panels and artist talks throughout all of Zine Fest day 2 at the Lawrence Public Library. Highlights include a speculative poetry workshop, a Perzinesters with Disabilities panel and Show n’ Tell Zine Night at Lucia. • Sunday, Aug. 31 is the classic daylong Vendor Fair at Van Go where attendees can buy or trade for zines, comics, chapbooks, pamphlets and more. “The fair will host over 120 local and regional artists including BIPOC, woman/femme, LGBTQIA+, and youth zine-makers as well as zinesters with disabilities,” according to the release.

Vendor Fair prices typically range from $1 to $15 and many artists accept credit card or mobile payment apps.

Food and drink will also be available from JBs Tacos and Kona Ice trucks. Find out more about day 3 programming here.
