Lawrence Humane Pets of the Week: These fee-waived dogs are still looking for homes after Clear the Shelter Day

Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.

Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.

More than a dozen dogs will have their adoption fees waived for the rest of the month following a successful Clear the Shelter Day at the Lawrence Humane Society over the weekend.

Almost 100 animals were adopted this Saturday during LHS’s Clear the Shelter Day. After extending waived fees through Sunday, an additional 22 cats and 18 dogs were adopted, plus one pup went to a foster-to-adopt home.

In total, the Lawrence community found homes for 140 LHS animals over the weekend.

“(W)e’re thrilled and so thankful for everyone in our community that stepped up and opened up their homes and hearts for so many shelter animals!” Elina Alterman wrote via email. Alterman is the director of development and communications for the shelter.

There are still loving pets at LHS and in foster homes waiting for their time to shine — shelter staff had their fingers crossed that the following 15 pooches in particular would head out the door Saturday. Many of these dogs have stage fright, meaning they struggled more in the fast-paced Clear the Shelter Day environment.

These dogs will continue to have their fees waived until 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31. They are all spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Click any name to learn more about them from the shelter.

Evangeline runs like the wind, but slows down for some belly rubs and a good night’s sleep in her human’s bed. She particularly loves being around other dogs.
Cardi B is an anxious sweetheart who is learning to enjoy the love of human and canine kind. Per LHS, she’s looking for people who “understand that sometimes the sweetest reward is the love of a dog that takes a little longer to trust.”
Any low-maintenance couch potato will meet their match in Molly, who might be slow to trust but forms deep, loving attachments once she gets comfortable.
Chad “exudes joy,” according to LHS, and will befriend any family dogs for a rousing game of chase and couch snuggles.
Eddy Spaghetti has got it all on offer: couch snuggles, outdoor play, great leash walking, love of other dogs and an affinity for treat-based puzzles.
Brutus is a gentle giant who has successfully lived with cats and kids, including infants and toddlers. This good boy is drawn to the water, be it a hose in the backyard or a camping ground next to the lake.
Howard, or Howie for short, is an exercise companion for walks, fetch, car rides and tug-of-war.
After five years in and out of the shelter for reasons outside of his control, senior Samson is ready for a retirement home where he can be a chill couch potato.
Gentle Lucy Lu may not jump at the thought of a long walk, but put her in a kiddie pool and she will happily splash and blow bubbles.
Loralei is the ideal adventuring partner as she loves to go just about anywhere and is a fast learner.
Guppy’s dignified jowls may not betray the fact that he adores a game of tug-of-war, cuddling and a spa day full of baths and nail clipping.
Despite surviving parvo as a puppy and losing an ear in a train accident, Isa “continues to live life with such zest,” according to LHS.
Mr. Greg is some lucky human’s new running buddy — but he’s also a prime snuggle bug.
Loyal and loving Lucy is the definition of a human’s best friend. This 7-year-old, weighing only 35 pounds, thrives with a welcoming dog the same size or bigger to befriend.
Garret is an overstuffed chair connoisseur and a certified romantic who will give his human constant, unconditional love.
