Watch party locations in Lawrence, Overland Park announced for John Green’s sold-out talk

Offsite watch party locations have been announced after all of the tickets to a free John Green talk were claimed quickly.

KU Reads announced in May that John Green would give a free talk and book signing 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive. Green’s essay collection, “The Anthropocene Reviewed,” is this year’s common book selection. Giselle Anatol, director of KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities, will be in conversation with Green at the event.

All tickets — just fewer than 2,000 — were claimed in less than three days by KU staff, faculty and students before any could become available to the public.

In response, KU Reads organizers have established three free watch party locations to allow the Lawrence community and beyond to come together for Green’s talk. Each site will have a raffle for a KU Reads prize pack.

Here are the locations:

  • Watson Library, Three West Reading Room at 1425 Jayhawk Blvd. on KU’s campus. Most parking lots on campus don’t require specialized passes after 5 p.m. See a map of lots here.
  • Lawrence Public Library auditorium, 707 Vermont St. People can park along the street, in nearby lots or in the Vermont Street Parking Garage. Downtown parking is free after 6 p.m.
  • Hawks Nest in the Regents Center Building, KU Edwards Campus, at 12600 Quivira Road in Overland Park. All lot parking is free.

Seating is limited to 100 at the Watson Library and 120 at the public library. All watch parties are free and begin at 7 p.m.

Anyone can digitally attend the event on the Hall Center’s Crowdcast channel. Viewers don’t need to register in advance but must sign up for a free Crowdcast account.

KU Reads has multiple events, themed around Green’s book, slated for this school year. Most are open to the general public. Learn more in this article.
