Carrie Kellogg McDonald, age 83, died September 6th, 2025 in Lawrence, KS. She is survived by three children William (Denver, CO), Robert (Oakland, CA), and Thomas (Golden, CO) and four grandchildren: Ian, Alec, Devyn, and Kiran McDonald, and daughters–in-law Kelly McDonald, Donna Ah Sue, and Naomi Binkley McDonald.
Born September 15, 1941 in Wichita, KS, the eldest child of Robert Verne and Mary Martha Carson Kellogg, Carrie’s surviving siblings are Nan Harper (Jerry), and Paula Kellogg (Gordie Sailors), Barbara Gannon (Robert Sullivan), Gina Kellogg, and Jack Kellogg (Joy Darrah) and numerous attentive nieces and nephews.
She graduated from Wichita’s North High and attended Mills College in Oakland, CA, where she began a lifelong love of reading and research. In 1961 she married William Getto McDonald in Wichita. They divorced in 1977. Carrie was both a perennial volunteer and paid manager.
Carrie was proud of her service as President of the Jr. League of Denver and her appointment to the board of Citizens’ Appreciate Police by Denver District Attorney Dale Tooley. The confidence she gained allowed her to say “yes” to many opportunities, including roles as longtime tournament manager on the men’s professional tennis circuit, a property manager, a real estate broker, and numerous parttime jobs.
Moving to Redstone, CO in the 1980s, Carrie was a founding member of the Redstone Art Foundation, President of the Redstone Community Association, and Chair of the Pitkin County-appointed Redstone Historic Preservation Commission. At the Historic Redstone Inn Carrie wore the hats of bartender, hostess, banquet manager, wedding coordinator, server, and Food and Beverage Manager.
Carrie moved to Lawrence in 2002 and worked as an office manager for KU’s Western Civilization Program for 7 years. In retirement, she found that cooking and entertaining friends and family brought her joy, as it had throughout her life.
Carrie was grateful to her siblings, especially Paula and Gordie Sailors for their extraordinary care and unwavering generosity, to her children, and to her longtime friends Janet Botkin and Mary Barnett. Janet and Kristin Bordman provided invaluable daily attention.
Carrie was well-tended by Visiting Nurses of the Douglas County Hospice team. We respectfully request donations in Carrie’s name to be directed to Visiting Nurses of Douglas County Hospice. 200 Maine Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
Carrie’s ashes will be buried on some sunny day near her deceased siblings Thomas, Verne, and Amy Kellogg and her great great-grandparents Dinah and George Kellogg in the historic Eldridge cemetery in rural Colwich, KS.
